Corrine Wins Bath CC Road Race Yesterday and ties the Cotswold League Win
Sunday 9th August saw the final of 4 rounds of the inaugural Steele Davis Women’s Cotswold Cycle Racing League. The race, hosted by Bath CC took place over a rolling 15 mile circuit completed 3 times around the villages of Grittleton and Sherston. A healthy prize fund and favourable weather forecast seemed to attract a strong field with nearly 40 riders taking the start line, some of whom had taken part in last weekends Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix.
The series so far had been hard fought, seemingly with Rebecca Waters (Performance Cycles) and Corinne Clark (Ride 24/7) dominating for victory. Corinne won the opening round hosted by Performance Cycles with Rebecca finishing second and the roles were reversed for the next round hosted by Ride 24/7, with Rebecca taking the victory and Corinne second. In the third and penultimate round hosted by Radeon Coaching, Corinne fell foul to bad luck, puncturing whilst in the break. Rebecca drove on to a commanding victory with Corinne salvaging third place leaving her with 3 points to make up in the final round.
With such a strong field on the day and a challenging course the peleton was soon reduced to a fraction of those taking the start line by the end of the first lap, which was ridden at an average speed of 25mph. With 2 laps to go and all of the pre-race favourites still together many of the girls tried to instigate break aways but no one was able to gain an advantage of a few hundred meters with so many strong riders remaining and all attacking moves almost instantly nullified. Phoebe Speck (Ride 24/7) notably spent a long time dictating the pace and ensuring that no one was give a free reign and with one lap to go it seemed that all had resolved for a bunch sprint. A late move by Chanel Mason (Army Cycling Union) to drive the pace onwards strung out the field, shelling out a few others leaving a group of around 15 to contest the sprint. After the final turn and with the finish line in sight Corinne attacked with a long sprint, almost matched by Tamara Davenne (Zappi’s Racing Team), Corinne managed to find another gear and surged again to cross the line first with Tamara second followed by Rebecca third. This result, an almost replica of the previous week saw Corinne and Rebecca tied to finish the series joint winners. #SteeleDavis.
